Western Rivers Information




Colorado River
Cataract Canyon

About 70 miles from Mineral Bottom or Potash to Lake Powell at Hite Marina. Some of the largest Class IV-V whitewater in the country at high season. Applications accepted the first business day of January -- first-come, first-served. Fax: (435) 259-4285

Colorado River
Grand Canyon

225 miles of ultimate whitewater thrills. New Applications accepted only during the month of February. A waiting list of over 600 names means you could wait for more than 8 years for your name to come to the top of the list. Kern River
Forks of the Kern

A Wild & Scenic River, the Forks of the Kern runs through 17 miles of nearly continuous series class IV and V rapids and waterfalls. Permits required from May 15 to September 15. Reservations made in advance through a drawing selection process beginning March 15 and ending April 15.

Main Fork

Salt River

60 miles of whitewater from the Salt River Canyon bridge to Lake Roosevelt. A wilderness permit is required during the high season from March to May 15. Group size is limited to 15. Applications accepted December through January. Day permits are required by the White Mountain Apache Tribe from the bridge to the Wilderness section -- available at the Salt River Canyon Store.

San Juan River

84 miles of class II-III whitewater and interesting geology and archeology from Sand Island to Clay Hills. Shorter trips can take-out at Mexcian Hat or go from Mexican Hat to Clay Hills. Lottery applications accepted until the last day of January.
